The right to begin is the power to originate: to start a company, a movement, a body of work, an argument. It is different from the power to win. Whoever can begin, cheaply and often, sets the terms that everyone else must respond to.
Cheap ability is not broad right
Beginnings were historically expensive, and their cost acted as a filter on who got to originate. AI collapses much of that cost — but a cheaper ability to begin is not the same as a broader right to begin. Two filters remain: access (who can reach the tools) and standing (whose beginnings are allowed to matter).
Why it’s the decisive question
Protecting the right to begin means keeping both filters open. If beginning becomes cheap for everyone but only some beginnings are allowed to matter, we automate production while leaving the old order of permission fully intact — a revolution in capability with no change in who decides.
