Standing precedes usefulness is the framework’s answer to the hardest cultural challenge to standing — why should the field support someone who contributes nothing? A compassionate reply loses that argument; a structural one does not. The participant and the ecology are not separable in the way the question assumes: the ecology does not first exist and then decide who deserves admission, because participants constitute the ecology — their capacities, relationships, needs, burdens, and future emergence are part of what it is.
From which the order of operations is fixed: you cannot require someone to demonstrate successful participation before granting the conditions under which meaningful participation becomes possible. Standing is the precondition, not the prize. It is distinct from contribution, jurisdiction, and reciprocity, which remain real and conditional — it fixes only the floor beneath them, and it is the deeper root of the practical rule that puts standing first and money second.
