Protected uselessness is the model’s sharpest boundary against optimization. A system focused on ecological capacity will eventually confront every activity with what does this contribute? — and applied universally, that question kills exactly what makes life worth continuing. A child draws for fun; someone plays guitar badly; people dance, garden flowers nobody needs, spend years learning something with no application, celebrate birthdays. So the model grants standing legitimacy to activity whose immediate justification is simply that life is occurring through it:
Not everything has to become useful.
It is the ground the rest of aliveness stands on — play, celebration, beauty, and the rest all depend on the field being willing to leave some things unexamined by utility. It is the direct counterweight to the right not to be systematically deadened: the deadening comes precisely when every corner of a life must answer for its contribution.
