A protected failure space is somewhere a participant can choose, fail, recover, learn, and revise without catastrophic consequence. Education is the obvious case, but the framework extends it to local governance, small business, craft, relationships, and community projects — anywhere recovery skill is built by surviving small mistakes. The danger the concept guards against is specific to the protector-dependency scenario: if AI prevents every low-stakes error, people arrive at high-stakes situations having never developed the ability to recover from one.
The framework insists this is developmental infrastructure rather than inefficiency — the friction is doing real work. It is the protector-scenario expression of what emergence needs to stay alive: room to be provisional, to try something that might not work, and to be changed by the attempt. Removing all survivable failure in the name of safety trades a small, local risk for a large, systemic one — a population that has never practiced recovery.
