Meaning pressure is what remains, and intensifies, when survival pressure recedes. For most of history necessity answered tomorrow’s question for us — find food, protect the children, pay the rent, go to work — and much of a life’s direction came pre-supplied by that need. Modern society in particular uses employment as a quiet meaning system: someone expects you, your competence is needed, success is legible. Remove the need to work and you remove not just an inconvenience but a great deal of externally supplied meaning architecture.
Struggle moves upward
The result is paradoxical: AI may not eliminate human struggle so much as move it upward — from survival pressure toward meaning pressure. A future person with security, education, healthcare, and freedom from compulsory work may still, at twenty-five, ask why am I here? — and the model should not read that as a system failure but as an unavoidable feature of conscious participation, possibly exposed rather than caused by abundance. It is the reason the model must keep the question of what it is all for at its center rather than its edge.
