The commons of field conditions widens the tragedy of the commons past its usual object. In the classic case each farmer gains by adding one more cow to a shared pasture, capturing the benefit while the damage spreads across everyone, until the pasture collapses though no one wanted it to. The framework’s addition is that the shared thing being consumed need not be a physical resource: contestability, diversity, trust, traversability, human competence, independent institutions, time to adapt, and ontological openness are all depletable in exactly the same way.
The clearest example is manipulation resistance. Every firm deploying more persuasive AI may individually gain conversions while collectively consuming the informational environment’s resistance to manipulation, until no one can tell whether any signal is organic — a common field condition spent by many locally rational choices. Naming these as a commons is what lets the framework see a whole class of harms that no price and no single actor registers, and it is why the shared-viability constraint treats certain field conditions as things competition may not consume.
